AS NIGERIA TURN 52

I have been sitting here nearly all day reading all sort of comments on two of the world's largest social networks, Facebook and Twitter. Some are congratulatory messages about the change in the number of years of our existence as a country from 51 to 52 but on the flip side are a number of others who express grievances and disappointment at the country's deteriorating political and economic system.

According to the book 'One Minute Manager' by Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson;

''there is nothing wrong with condemning a person's behaviour but it is wrong to condemn the person''

While it is not wrong to condemn the country's political and economic system it is wrong to condemn NIGERIA.

This question will help us to know why I say so.

WHO IS NIGERIA?

The confusion and problem sets in when we look at Nigeria as a name and not as a people.

Nigeria is everyone person making up the over 160 million people counted during the census.

If this is valid, then who is to be blamed? Ourselves or the mere name 'NIGERIA'?.

If we are Nigeria, in the same breathe as the people in the church are the church, then who deserves all the blame we pour on the name NIGERIA?

It is high time we started to take responsibility as a people living in this hundreds of thousands square meters that Providence has apportioned to us the people called NIGERIA because that is the difference between a success and a failure.

We must see ourselves as the problem or part of the problems and also the solution to our problems or nothing will change.

We are the ones to stop corruption, bribery, money laundering, bad governance, human right violation, political killings, insecurity, tribalism and sexual discrimination among others.

The most outrageous of the comments I saw today is the one expressed by someone who said 'Nigeria is a fool at 52'. It is easy to blame the government and leaders for every bad thing and most of them deserve to be blamed but don't be shocked to also know that you also deserve a part of it as well as I do too.

What have you done to make this country a good place and an incorruptible place in the little corner you are for now.

Do you deal justly with people you are superior to?

Do you tell the truth?

Do you represent Nigeria positively when you go on social network sites, etc.

All this in the long run will determine what our future will look like.

As we admit that we have not meet up to our expectations as a people and nation, we  should not continue to drag this nation to poverty and shame.

Bring out your best and add to mine and in the next couple of years, we shall be the heroes and heroines our country will celebrate for the beautiful future that only YOU and I can paint.

God bless us all the wonderful, great, beautiful, and awesome people called Nigeria.

Happy 52nd Independence Nigeria.
